Designing for Equity and Inclusion

JEDI Guides and Resources

Purpose

Committed to transforming practices within our professional community, NCNOMA and AIANC have partnered to elevate diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our goal is to identify, encourage, and celebrate environments where all architects in North Carolina belong, especially those marginalized by the field and systems of inequity. As outlined in the MOU established between the two organizations in 2020, we seek to influence change by providing resources that encourage tangible change.

We took the next step forward by launching the Equity and Inclusion Challenge and Award in 2023.  In advance of the award,  a year-long Equity and Inclusion Challenge began in December 2022 as a voluntary call to action for all architecture and design firms around the state. The challenge includes monthly recommendations and resources for participants to take actionable steps to move the needle forward. The AIA NC & NCNOMA Equitable and Inclusive Practice Award became a standing service award starting in 2023. The award recognizes and celebrates individuals or firms who have made significant progress in advancing equity and inclusion in the firm.  We are not looking for perfection, but we are looking to celebrate progress.

The path to equity and inclusion is incremental in nature. We envision a future in which individuals contribute the fullness of their diverse experience to a better collective experience in the built environment. We believe that each step is built upon the last. We challenge each person and firm to take their next step on the journey to a more equitable, and inclusive future. In this challenge, we celebrate commitment and progress.
