AIA NC - October O.W.L.S. Webinar with Maxson Associates

This course provides architects with a comprehensive understanding of large operable glass wall systems, with a specific focus on how these systems contribute to occupant health, safety, and welfare. Participants will learn how folding, sliding, and pivot door systems can enhance natural daylighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, and spatial flexibility—key factors in promoting indoor environmental quality and occupant well-being. Through real-world project examples, attendees will examine how thoughtful integration of these systems supports both aesthetic goals and essential functional needs in code-compliant design. 1.5. AIA NC - Positioning for Net Zero: Architectural-Structural Coordination to Reduce Carbon in Structures

The SE 2050 Commitment for structural engineers addresses embodied carbon in building materials, and the Architecture 2030 Commitment addresses both operational and embodied carbon.  Discipline coordination is needed to fulfill these commitment goals on projects.

During this presentation, two members of the Sustainable Design Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of North Carolina – Senior Structural Engineer, Bethany Whitehurst, P.E., S.E., of Clark Nexsen, A JMT Company and Design Engineer, Alyssa Libby, E.I. of Bennett & Pless – will discuss the differences between operational and embodied carbon and how embodied carbon is calculated for materials.

This session will address how architects and structural engineers can coordinate to reduce both operational and embodied carbon to meet the carbon reduction goals through identifying embodied carbon hot spots, incorporating thermal breaks at exterior structural elements, performing carbon intensity bay studies, and reusing structure.  The presentation will also address marketing embodied carbon reduction to clients and the consideration of sustainability in building design awards.

AIA NC - COTE Program 2: Energy Star v. 3.2 For Contractors and Architects

This course is designed to give architects and contractors a broad understanding of the Energy Star new homes program as well as a deeper understanding of how design decisions come together into a package that will pass the stricter version 3.2 of the program. The first hour of the course focuses on how the Energy Star program is structured, what versions mean, and how Energy Star implements them to continuously improve energy efficiency. It describes the checklists and some common mechanics and pitfalls to all the versions. The second hour takes a deeper dive into four prototypical house types and shows how project teams might make a package of design decisions about insulation, windows, mechanical equipment, and appliances that all comes together to achieve a passing score for this challenging program.

AIA Piedmont - Gallery Opening: NC MOD- AIA Piedmont and The Art Gallery at Congdon Yards Mid-Century Design & North Carolina's Modern Legacy

NC MOD: Mid-Century Design & North Carolina’s Modern Legacy

September 11 - October 30

The Harmony of Materials: Mid-Century Modern designers had a deep appreciation for materials and their inherent qualities. Wood, particularly teak, walnut, and oak, played a prominent role in furniture and architectural elements. The warmth of wood was often juxtaposed with metal accents, such as steel or brass, creating a visually striking contrast. These materials were celebrated for their natural beauty and durability.

Bringing Nature Indoors: A key philosophy of Mid-Century Modern Design was the integration of nature into living spaces. Expansive windows and open floor plans allowed for an abundance of natural light and a seamless connection to the outdoors. Indoor plants and the use of earthy colours further emphasized this connection, creating interiors that felt inviting and grounded.

Simplicity and Functionality: Above all, Mid-Century Modern Design champions functionality without sacrificing aesthetics. Furniture pieces were designed with usability in mind, often featuring innovative storage solutions and multi-purpose designs. Every element had a purpose, contributing to the overall efficiency of the space.

AIA Triangle - Building Conversations: Architects and Local Leaders - Durham

Join us for Building Conversations: Architects and Local Leaders, a morning roundtable bringing together local elected officials and members of the design profession for meaningful dialogue about the future of our communities.

Over a light breakfast, we’ll explore how zoning, housing policy, and planning decisions impact affordability, sustainability, walkability, and civic design, and why architects should be at the table when those decisions are made.

This is more than a networking event; it’s an opportunity to influence how our cities grow. Architects and designers are uniquely positioned to help shape equitable, people-centered places, and this conversation is a critical step toward making design a central part of public policy.

Please RSVP to reserve your seat.

Let’s build better communities together.
